Evernote, Take Your Stuff With You

It's hard to do a "Quick Tip" on Evernote!  Evernote is a note app you can put on all your devices and it syncs over all those devices.

But that description seems so lacking.

It's such a broad note app.  A note can be a photo, a document, text, a clipping from the internet or an email, or voice note.  You can set it up to do so many things!  You can take photos of notes on different colored background Post-It Notes and based on the color, it will file the note in the notebook you designate for that color.

The search function in Evernote is second to none.  When you search for something, it looks for that word in documents, handwritten notes, photos, and of course, text.  Yes, it actually "reads" photos and scanned handwriting!

I dabbled with Evernote over the years, but it wasn't until I started using it for everything that Evernote really became useful to me.  Here's a partial list of what I use Evernote for:

  • I keep a daily handwritten journal that I scan on a daily basis and file in Evernote
  • A running grocery list
  • Scans of menus of restaurants
  • Recipes, recipes, and more recipes!
  • A running list of things I need to go over with others at work
  • A notebook on each vehicle:  license plate photos, registrations, insurance, tire and service documents, etc.
  • Information about the duplex we rent (notes, rent payments, etc.)
  • I scanned my kids' baby books and old school work -- Evernote is my scrapbook
  • Ongoing budget and bills listed
  • Address book
  • Christmas card list
  • Notebooks of information I keep for my online work
  • Copies of each page my websites
It can be overwhelming to have all this information, but yet, it's so handy to have it just a search available!

One of the best things I ever did was spend a 3-day weekend scanning every one of my recipes and adding them to Evernote.  I enjoy seeing the handwriting of my loved ones and myself and all the love that went into the recipes.  For the recipe books I have, I just scanned the Index pages.  I also use Evernote's web clipper to clip recipes from the internet.  Now all I do is search for whatever recipe I want, and Evernote pulls it up (handwritten, in an index, or as clipped from the web).  I pull it up on my tablet and set the tablet in it's stand on the kitchen counter and can cook until my heart's content!

There are many add-on apps and ways to use Evernote.  I would never get through it all in one blog post!  So for now, check out Evernote and see how it can be useful to you.
